Crist led the Tourism Competitiveness & Sustainable Development project, based in Costa Rica from 1996-1999. Using principles of entrepreneurial conservation--the idea that investors have a role to play in, and can expect attractive return on investment from, conservation of both natural and cultural patrimony--from his doctoral dissertation at Cornell University, this led to the founding of La Paz Group.
