Skills-Based Learning: Program Design Enhancing Access, Equity, Inclusion

Learning Objectives:

• Define skills-based learning: Participants will examine issues around global program design that integrates skills-based learning outcomes, and will be challenged to identify both opportunities and constraints in incorporating skills-based learning outcomes for a variety of global program models beyond internships
• Employ a critical lens about access, equity, and inclusion: Participants will be asked to employ a critical lens to explore models of access, equity, and inclusion in global education with a goal of expanding our shared understanding to include addressing obstacles and barriers in program design that can suppress participation in all forms of global education among students
• Develop credit-bearing academic program models with career-focused learning outcomes: Participants will be tasked with developing and discussing program models that are not traditional internships, but rather are other examples of academic, credit-bearing global programs that intentionally integrate skills-based, career-focused learning outcomes in their program design
• Explore how community colleges widely incorporate skills-based learning outcomes: Participants will be challenged to identify ways in which community colleges have successfully incorporated skills-based learning outcomes into a wide array of global education program models, and will be asked to articulate a plan to include employer-informed skills that can be incorporated into their own global program designs
